Dulux Race to the King 2023 · 17 June 2023 to 18 June 2023 ·

At the Tom Bowdidge Youth Cancer Foundation, our mission is to bring comfort, care, and hope to young people living with cancer and their families. Inspired by Tom’s vision and courage, we are dedicated to addressing not only the medical challenges of cancer but also the emotional, practical, and social struggles that come with it. We believe every young person deserves dignity, support, and the chance to thrive, no matter their diagnosis. That is why we provide essential resources, such as Tom’s Comfort and Care Kits, to ease long days in hospital, alongside emotional and practical support that helps families feel less alone in their journey. We strive to create an environment where young people are seen, heard, and understood, ensuring that their unique needs are met with compassion and respect. Our mission extends beyond the hospital walls. We are committed to funding vital research into teenage cancers, raising awareness, and campaigning for change so that young patients receive the specialist care they deserve. By working closely with hospitals, schools, and communities, we aim to bridge the gaps in support and ensure that no young person has to face cancer without help. Driven by Tom’s legacy, we stand with determination, kindness, and hope, empowering young people with cancer to face the future with strength, comfort, and courage.

Story

In August whilst on holiday and after having a couple of day time (morning) beers I was contacted by a friend to see if I was interested in running a non-stop 62.5 miles/100km Ultramarathon that he was signing up to in June. My response, as anybody’s would be was “No, that sounds horrendous.”

He replied “Firstly, if I do this and you don’t I will officially be a better athlete than you. Secondly, just think of it as 12 hours away from the kids.” With a such well measured response by both threatening my ego, and guaranteeing 12 hours of peace, I was sold.

Ultra training started in September with a previous furthest run of 11 miles (17.6km) and no passion or desire for running. I am now just 5 months, 600 training miles (1000km)  and 62 non-stop miles (100km) of finishing The Race To The King Ultramarathon.

I would like to use this as an opportunity to raise funds for the The Tom Bowdidge Foundation. The TBF has been a charity close to the hearts of my family since it began in 2014, and do amazing work supporting Teenage Cancer.
