London to Brighton Cycle 2023 · 10 September 2023 ·

London to Brighton Cycle Ride will be celebrating its 14th Anniversary in 2023 and the event is set to be even bigger and better than ever before!

Story

In February 2021 I fractured my left tibia caused by a Tumor which I was unaware of. Few days later I was diagnosed with B-cell Non Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

For around 9 months before the diagnosis, I had issues with my knee. I had been putting this down to an injury at the gym. As I began to pick up a limp, I went to my GP and was referred to a physiotherapist. I had an appointment via video call and was recommended a number of weight-bearing exercises. During this period, my mobility became impaired and I was signed off work. My knee got progressively worst and a hard lump began to show. I pushed for a physical examination with the physio, he noted a protruding lump and referred me back to the GP for further investigation. A few weeks passed and I could now barely walk. I had a gut feeling something wasn’t right so took matters into my own hands. I booked a private MRI scan and within days my results were forwarded to the GP. I was told they suspected it could be sarcoma and referred to a specialist unit at Northampton hospital the next week. I was given crutches and told to keep off of my leg as it was now so weak it could break at any moment. They booked me in for a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. The night before my appointment, I knocked my foot getting into bed and my leg broke. I was in agony, waiting for an ambulance, overthinking everything. I was taken to Bedford A&E for the night then transferred to Stanmore Orthopaedic by Ambulance. I had my biopsy here as an inpatient and was fitted with a cast. Whilst waiting for results, Doctors discussed the possibility of a prosthetic leg and we went through what this would mean for my future.
After a few days, the results came back as B Cell Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. I felt relieved as doctors assured me this was a more treatable outcome. They talked me through the next steps and supported me for the rest of my stay. After what felt like forever, I was discharged and went home to prepare for what was to come. I had a PICC line fitted and underwent 12 weeks of R-CHOP chemotherapy at the Primrose Unit in Bedford followed by two weeks of radiotherapy in Cambridge. My scan results showed that my cancer had gone into remission in November 2021.
Throughout the process I couldn’t thank my girlfriend, friends, family and work colleagues enough. I went through this while hospitals were still under covid restrictions. The amazing doctors and nurses at Bedford, Northampton, Stanmore and Cambridge were so supportive and guided me through every step of the way. The amount of support I had from everyone close to me was unreal. The regular calls and visits from you all has helped me massively through all of this.

I am grateful to be in remission and finally feel back to my self again. I have wanted to raise money for charity from the moment I was diagnosed and I can now start to do that. I will be doing the London to Brighton cycle raising money for lymphoma action. If you would like to support, any donations are greatly appreciated.
