We provide skilled and compassionate care to those with life-limiting illnesses

Story

Updated on Oct 2nd 2011 at 7:50 AM from the JustGiving API

Following on from my first challenge in 2011 i am now taking on the Downs Double. this is two races of 100 miles non stop. the races will take place over the South Downs and the  North Downs. Details of the races can be seen at www.centurionrunning.com. Later in the year I will also be running the Beachy Head Marathon. Please consider sponsoring me it's for a wonderful cause. Thankyou

St Wilfrids Hospice does some wonderful work. A service provided by courageous people for courageous people. The assistant they provide terminally ill patients with is astounding. In the last few weeks of life people are offered comfort, compassion, and more importantly some humour. Imagine having the skill to support someone who knows they are dying, and support them in a way that their time in the hospice is not all about cancer, in fact more an escape from it. People often think of hospice's as being a service for the elderly but nearly a third of all patients are under 65. Provision of care is provided at home as well as in the hospice. Imagine being able to give the gift of life to lose nearing the end of theirs. In addition to cancer patients with life limiting neurological illnesses and organ failure are also supported. When a patient passes the family are then supported by the bereavement team. All i can say is what a truly magnificent service. I hope no more of my family, including myself, ever need their services, but i know if they do they are in safe hands.

What a gift these people offer. Unfortunately it is a gift with inevitable high costs. These costs are never passed on to patients as noted on their website:

All care is offered free of charge regardless of patients’ circumstances, but the NHS only contributes 15 per cent of the £3.5 million annual running costs. For the remainder, the Hospice relies on the generosity of its supporters.

This means that St Wilfrids has a shortfall of £2,975,000 just to stay open and continue to offer their service. This shortfall is made up entirely of donations. To this end i have decided to try and do my bit to contribute towards this massive amount of money.

Please give generously, however big or small, your donations will make all the difference to so many people. If you can please consider gift aid it increases your donation by nearly 25%
