Darcey's Bike Ride for Charlie

Darcey's Bike Ride for Charlie · 8 June 2020
This year on Monday 8th June, Darcey is going to be cycling 3km to raise some money and awareness for the Charlie Gard Foundation.
Sadly Charlie gained his angel wings back in July 2017. He spent most of his short life in Great Ormond Street Hospital after being diagnosed with Mitochondrial DNA Depletion Syndrome. Mitochondria in our cells are responsible for creating 90% of the energy needed to sustain life and support organ function. When mitochondria stop working organs start to fail, people become sick, and sadly people can die. There are very few treatments for mitochondrial diseases, and there's currently no cure.
Had Charlie still been alive today he would be just a week younger than Darcey.
Since he passed away his amazing mummy and daddy set up the Charlie Gard Foundation to help other families who have been touched by a mitochondrial disease. They've also been working hard to get "Charlie's Law" introduced: an amendment to current legislation that would prevent any other families having to go through the courts like they did to try and save their child's life, and to make it easier for such families as well as medical staff.
Back in 2018 at just under 22 months Darcey walked 1km and raised £800 for the foundation. She was the Foundation's first official fundraiser and even made the headlines of the Leicester Mercury!
Last year she did a sponsored pony ride raising a further £356.
Her sponsored bike ride is going to be taking place at Aylestone Recreation Ground. She has only been learning to ride her bike for a couple of weeks and at the minute her little legs struggle to get started and she finds it difficult to pedal up hill so we are going to need to get plenty of practise in.
We would be so thankful if you could make a donation to the Charlie Gard Foundation by sponsoring Darcey.
