Story
As it's Martin Luther King Day in the US I thought it would be an appropriate date to launch my annual fundraising for The Kusasa Project (www.thekusasaproject.org) tied to a 109km cycle race - the Cape Argus Cycle Tour on March 10th. The Kusasa Project, a South African based charity, was started by me and Doug Gurr in 2006 and has been growing ever since, providing nutrition (our 600,000th meal served just recently!), literacy, sport, after school clubs, scholarships and material support to the underprivileged children of the Cape Winelands. Our overall budget for the organization, which serves over 1000 children annually is approximately £125,000 ($200,000) which Doug and I raise continually through our charming personalities, endless chatter and relentless detemination to help the kids. We take nothing out of it, pay all our own expenses and have a skeleton staff of incredibly dedicated but underpaid professionals, who are hooked by the potential of the amazing kids who are being let down by their government.
Last year we raised funds through the Argus appeal to support the Kusasa Project Early Learning Centre, which opened in 2012 to begin the education of black & coloured children from the township & farms in the Western Cape of South Africa. This has been such a success that we added another grade this January and have funding for a number of our teachers for 3 years. We hope to occupy a new classroom building this fall (thanks to the efforts of my friend Philip Green and Hope Through Action) and leave the church hall which has been the ELC's home since inception.
This year I'm hoping to raise funds to support the IT needs of the organization, specifically IT equipment for the ELC (tablets, electronic whiteboards and training for staff) and for the office so that our 52 sponsored scholars (one of our programs) have access to up to date, reliable IT equipment for study, homework and projects.
If you would like to support the kids through sponsorship of my ride we would all be hugely grateful - I promise, I'll earn every penny on this ride!
Thanks for your interest.
