65 Degrees North Eiger Challenge · 1 March 2023

Our mission is to offer wounded, injured & sick (WIS) service personnel & veterans the opportunity to participate in challenging adventure which has significant benefits; aiding & enhancing their recovery, enabling them to inspire & motivate others to overcome, achieve & succeed.

Story

Three veterans are to make a winter ascent of the infamous North Face of the Eiger to raise funds for the charity '65 Degrees North'.

Dave Pearce, Nick Arding and Guy Buckingham have recently been guiding for the charity and are passionate about its goal of supporting veterans in need.

Dave said:

'The Eiger North Face carries with it a global reputation; and rightly so. It is extreme and gets this grade because of the 1800m of committing climbing on one of the biggest north faces in Europe. It has an amazing history, both in triumph and tragedy. Conditions are key as rockfall is a present danger.

Myself , Nick and Guy plan to base ourselves close to the mountain from late March-early April 2023 and wait for the best conditions to then make a three day ascent of the Heckmair (1938) route.  Being committed and resolute is a must and we aim to have two austere bivouacs on the face.  The climb is but one part, then you have to get off…..also, not an easy task.

We aim to summit the Eiger and in-doing-so, raise funds for 65 Degrees North.  Thanks in advance for you contributions that go to the front-line in supporting our committed men and women of the armed forces, serving and as veterans.
Fight on!

Hi all,
Dave P here. A huge heartfelt thanks for your donations in support of 65DN and the Eiger challenge Guy and I attempted.  The face did not drop its ‘guard’ during our time in the area and thus, became too risky to make an attempt.  We did however, achieve lots and some pretty gnarly routes under full winter conditions.

Guy and I are still going to make an attempt as soon as conditions allow for us to go.  The page will remain open and in a ‘holding pattern’ until we make the call and head out to the Oberland again.  It is not over!

Thank you all massively.  Climb safe and enjoy the journey of adventure.
