March 7th: Beautiful day and a great atmosphere (in spite of the fires raging around the Cape peninsula) as yet another Cape Argus proved a great success. With the encouragement of fantastic supporters pushing me over my fundraising goal before I hit the start line for the first time ever, I had a great race and safely navigated the course for my 8th Argus. Thanks to the fantastic generosity of many people we've raised over 6,000 pounds so far.
On behalf of the teachers, staff and children of The Kusasa Project - Thank You!
The Kusasa Project exists to serve the educational, holistic and nutritional needs of poor black & coloured children living in the informal settlements and wine farms of the Western Cape of South Africa with an objective of providing the tools and motivation for them to build a brighter future. Each year I ride the Cape Argus to raise funds for various needs of the organization. This year I've targeted funds to provide ongoing training for our teaching staff. YOUR GENEROSITY WILL DIRECTLY BENEFIT WONDERFUL KIDS WHO DESERVE A GOOD EDUCATION.
What is The Kusasa Project? In 2006, while on a sabbatical from the City, I started reading & playing sports with a small group of poor black African primary school children attending one of the many failing rural schools in the area. Shortly afterwards, along with an ex-pat from London, I founded The Kusasa Project, with the intention to provide modest literacy support on a bi-weekly basis and some recreational activities. The modest beginning has grown in 8 years to encompass nutritional support (daily feeding of 1000 children), scholarship provision for 50 children to attend higher functioning schools, social work support, recreational activities and, since 2012, the creation of our own Early Learning Centre, providing high quality foundation phase education to 120 children (on a gender & race balanced basis) up through Grade 2 (soon to be Grade 3). We will shortly take occupancy of a new school building and, as evidence of the long term impact we have had, have just seen 4 of our older scholars begin university.
We rely on both corporate/foundational and individual donors to support us - we have 8 teachers, 4 full-time office/admin/social work staff - and, importantly, all donations & grants go directly to supporting the operations on the ground (our trustees & founders take no payment for services or travel expenses). Your donation via justgiving can be made through our UK Charities Commission registered vehicle - The Kusasa Project UK, or via our US, Dutch or South African trusts (call Dave on +447825274677 or email to info@thekusasaproject.org for details).
