Story

A HUGE THANKS TO ALL THOSE WHO HAVE MADE THIS A RECORD FUNDRAISING.  The Trustees, Children and Staff of The Kusasa Project are truly grateful for your support at a time when Brexit and other forces are making for an uncertain world.   We will continue to earn your confidence and offer our humble thanks for your concern for the kids of the Cape Winelands.

11 yrs ago I started reading to impoverished kids in the informal settlement in the Cape Winelands of South Africa. Struck by their passion for knowledge, but saddened by the terrible state of the local schools. With my friend Doug Gurr,  I formed  The Kusasa Project, a charity which now serves over 1500 poor children each day.   Since 2006 we have consistently grown and now with support from the likes of the Lessons for Life Foundation, Hope Through Action, the Cape Wine Auction Trust and others we have 3  core programs: our centre-piece Early Learning Centre: 1) a pre-primary and primary school with 120 Xhosa & Afrikaans children learning via a challenging and caring curriculum through grade 4;  2)a Breakfast Club/Feeding Scheme which has served over 2million meals to help kids face a day of learning; and 3)a Scholars Program providing fees and extra-curricular support to secondary and tertiary scholars.   We operate with a small staff and need to raise funds each year to support our programs.

For this, my 10th Argus I'm raising funds to provide medical insurance for our staff.  It is incredibly hard to recruit and retain excellent teachers and staff in a rural setting, most especially when government and private schools offer full benefit packages - the medical element of which is extremely important to young teachers.   Our teachers and staff make incredible sacrifices both financially and in the time they dedicate to the children and we do what we can to help them.  At a time when Brexit has effectively meant our funding has decreased by 20% we are need to work even harder to raise funds to keep our programs going.  After 11 years we intend to do so!

For your information, I pay all my expenses and everything raised goes to helping the children.  It is the aim of the organization to provide a brighter future to the children of South Africa for many years to come.  "Its all about the kids!"

You can help support us through donations in the UK, South Africa, the Netherlands and the USA via tax efficient vehicles.  100% of your donations go to help the kids.
