Addenbrooke's Charitable Trust (ACT) is dedicated to supporting innovation in patient care across Addenbrookes and the Rosie hospitals.

Story

I was lucky enough to be chosen for a charity place in the 2020 London Marathon, running as part of Team Addenbrooke’s.

On Oct 4th last year I ran the virtual London Marathon, for Addenbrooke's Charitable Trust, on a route around my local town with a few family and friends to cheer me on. That was my dress rehearsal as I will finally get the chance to take on this challenge around London at this year's London Marathon on Sunday 3rd October.

My reasons for electing to raise funds for Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust (ACT) is 2 fold;

Firstly, in the summer of 2018 my mum was diagnosed with a form of cancer, following which she was referred to Addenbrooke’s. She underwent surgery later in the year and then had an 8 week intensive course of radiotherapy which finished in February 2019. Her treatment was successful and she continues to return to Addenbrooke’s for follow up consultations.

Secondly, in January 2019, my sister-in-law and her two children were involved in a serious road collision. Sadly my sister-in-law was pronounced dead at the scene. My eleven year old niece was initially transferred to Peterborough hospital where she underwent emergency lifesaving treatment and later that night transferred to Addenbrooke’s Paediatric Intensive Care Unit where she was placed in a medically induced coma and underwent numerous surgeries. The treatment that she received at the time and the rehabilitation support that she continues to receive means that she should now go on to lead a long and full life. My eight year old nephew was unconscious following the collision and was therefore transferred from the scene directly to Addenbrooke’s. Fortunately, his injuries did not prove to be extensive but he received treatment for a neck injury.

The specialist care and support provided by the dedicated staff at Addenbrooke’s have inspired me to give a little back and this fund raising opportunity allows us in some way to give thanks to the staff on behalf of my family, my mum and my sister-in-law.

Any donations would be gratefully received for an extremely worthy and precious cause.
