Running for Alzheimer's · 24 August 2022

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

I signed up for my first marathon, the Manchester Marathon in April, but an achilles injury put paid to that but I've now signed up for April 2023.

I've also decided that if I'm doing all that training I might as well make it work for a charitable purpose as well as trying to stave off old age. So every month I will be running a half marathon until the Manchester Marathon next year. This started last month with the Great North Run and continues with the Manchester Half in October and the Malaga Half in November (yes I know but at my age it's getting a bit colder then!) others yet to be decided.

My Mum, Sheila, was diagnosed Dementia a few years ago and is now in a care home. Alzheimer's or dementia is a horribly debilitating disease leaving sufferers detached from reality and family and friends feeling helpless to assist.

The Alzheimer’s Society is helping to transform the landscape of dementia forever. Until the day we find a cure, we will create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice.

Mum is 93 now so it will be too late for her but I will keep running through the dark, cold and wet winter days and nights and hopefully you will help me raise some money to help the Alzheimers Society continue their massively important work to try and find that elusive magical treatment so many people like my Mum desperately need.
