Never Mind The Bealachs... it's Davie's Ochil Challenge · 26 September 2021

Fife Young Carers envisions a world where the roles and contributions of unpaid Young Carers and Young Adult Carers are recognised, and where these marginalised young people have the tailored, holistic support they need to thrive. We improve the lives of children and young people aged up to 25 in Fife with caring responsibilities by advancing education, employment, wellbeing and providing respite. We walk alongside Young Carers as they progress through life, empowering them to overcome barriers, stigma and low confidence, pursue their aspirations, and achieve a quality of life equitable to their peers. Our integrated services include person-centred, strengths-based one-to-one and group support; education, transitions and employability programmes; family mediation; befriending; and wellbeing support. We work systemically, raising awareness, training professionals and building strategic partnerships to identify hidden Carers, promote dignity and create environments where all Young Carers can build resilience, enhance confidence and realise their full potential.

Story

There are 11 Summits in the Ochil Range with 100 Metre prominence and they form a very tempting circuit which starts and ends in Dollar.  On Sunday 26th September I am going to run this circuit as fast as I can.

The Hills are: King’s Seat, Ben Cleuch, Dumyat, Core Hill, Wether Hill, Steele’s Knowe, Corb Law, Innerdouny Hill, Lendrick Hill, Down Hill, and Commonedge Hill (c. 50m, with c.12,000 ft of ascent.)

On 5th August 2020 I was running in the hills behind Scheihallion, looking for a long lost fairy portal to the underworld. I found the portal but I forgot to leave whisky and so the fairies got me back by giving me a stroke. As the doctor examined me in Ninewells Hospital I wondered if my running life was finished. Fortunately my stroke was minor,  the fairies had been kind to me. I'd been given 'a short sharp spiritual slap to the head' as my friend Lynda said.

Soon I was soon back on my feet and out in the hills again.

It's taken a year or so to build my fitness again but now I'm feeling strong and I would like to take on a challenge,  to give something back, and maybe see if I can't earn a bit of goodwill from the fairy folk.

So I decided to fundraise for a charity I really care about.

The charity is Fife Young Carers.

This last year has been horrible and stressful for everybody. For kids with caring responsibilities it has been added an extra layer of difficulty to the complications of life.

Some years ago I wrote a play 'Monster in the Hall' which told the story of a young carer. Writing that play I was helped by Fife Young Carers. The kids I met there were a funny, sparky, energetic, idiosyncratic, thoughtful bunch of kids who loved their families, just like everybody else. The challenge they faced was that life had thrown them extra responsibilities as carers for their parents or siblings and so they needed a bit of support, an organisation who has their backs, which is just what FYC offers.

So, if you were able, I would love it if you could help this fine organisation and by extension help the young carers.

Thank you!
