Story
We are Alex's family: Dave (Dad), Anth (Mum) and Emelia (big Sister).
Big Al, Alex, was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma (a type of Brain Tumour) in September 2017 aged 3.5 years.
Medulloblastoma is the most common paediatric brain tumour but as treatments have to target the whole of the brain and spinal cord, they are aggressive and can leave long-term, life-altering disabilities for children who survive.
Big Al has battled through a lot to date, including an 8.5 hour brain operation 5 days after first being diagnosed, 6 weeks of daily radiotherapy under general anaesthetic with chemotherapy at the same time and is now undertaking a further 9 months of chemotherapy.
After much soul-searching and as part of the care Alex has been receiving from Great Ormond Street Hospital, UCLH and Watford Hospitals, we have agreed for him to take part in a Europe-wide trial called PNET5.
Big Al is the first child in the UK on the PNET5 trial.
Part of PNET5 aims to prove that children diagnosed with Alex's type of Medulloblastoma can benefit from a different treatment regimen resulting in fewer immediate side effects and reduced risk of critical long term disabilities, without any negative impact on length of survival.
We've joined together to raise money for The Brain Tumour Charity and specifically their funding towards the PNET5 trial.
Clinical trials are expensive - in this first year The Brain Tumour Charity need to raise £250,000 to fund the UK trial centre, the 'entry' biomarker testing and the quality of life assessment which is integrated into the trial.
Helped by his big sister Emelia and all his family and friends, Big Al is fighting his individual battle on a daily basis.
Please help him and us, his family, to know that the trial treatment he is undertaking will help advance our knowledge of Medulloblastoma Brain Tumours and improve treatment for children into the future, whatever the outcome for Alex.
Thank you,
Dave, Anth, Em and Alex
