Story

The 4th September 2021 will mark the 1 year anniversary of Oliver being diagnosed with his Brain tumour.

At 4.30am on the 4th September 2020 Oliver came into our bedroom feeling unwell. His words were, my brain hurts!! Within an hour he was In and out of consciousness . An ambulance was called and he was quickly taken to Barnsley hospital for tests. A CT scan showed he had a bleed on the brain with a 'mass' behind. He was very quickly put in an ambulance and taken through to Sheffield Childrens hospital.  He was sedated and given a detailed MRI. This showed how serious it was and they needed to operate immediately. The cancerous tumour was big and aggressive and although the surgery alone was very high risk, without surgery he wouldn't be with us much longer. It was almost a 10 hour operation but they successfully removed 80%. He woke up shortly after and his 1st words were, 'my brain doesn't hurt anymore' .

The surgery was preceded by months of radiotherapy and high dose isolation chemotherapy where he basically had to stay in his hospital room for months on end as he had no.immune system.

10 months later and after every side effect you can think of, multiple surgeries, infections and procedures he is home and recovering. The tumour was shrunk by over 50% and is now in a stable condition. The doctors and nurses at Sheffield childrens saved his life. They have become like a second family to us and we will never be able to thank them enough.

On the 1 year anniversary I will leave my house and walk the 16 mile journey to Sheffield Childrens hospital. The same life saving journey Oliver had to make 1 year earlier. On arrival I will thank the Doctors and nurses for everything they have done before I walk the 16 mile journey home. The same journey Oliver did recently after finishing his treatment.

Our friends, family and work colleagues have been so supportive and generous this past year and without all of their love and support I dont know how we would have coped. This walk will hopefully raise the profile of the amazing job these people do and raise a few quid to go towards the new cancer ward that Oliver has spent most of the last year on.

Thankyou for your continued support from Laura, David and our superhero, Oliver xxx 💜
