I’m completing my first marathon so thought why not make it a big one and run around New York City! As a lot of you know I’ve completed a few half marathons but never quite got to completing a marathon so now it’s time! Running this marathon will not only be a special achievement for myself but also help others through the CALM charity.

CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably)  is a charity and leading movement against male suicide, the single biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK. They offer support to men of any age who are in crisis/mental health issues and are pushing for changes in policy and practise so that suicide is better prevented. Also, supporting those bereaved by suicide through the support after suicide partnership. 

I work in an environment where I deal with mental health issues and unfortunately suicide and feel it is something close to my heart and hopefully with your generosity we can all hope to make a difference, mental health does not discriminate against anybody as we have seen over the past few years with famous people and people who we think have it all tragically taking there own lives!

Approximately one million people commit suicide each year worldwide, that is one death every 40 seconds or 3000 a day - that is a truly harrowing and saddening statistic!!!

There is no evidence to suggest that depression hits men harder than women but what we do do is bury our heads in the sand, bottle it up or turn to alcoholism, our depression is hidden away and goes undiagnosed. We are not brought up to talk about our emotions and when those emotions start to run away from us we are not equipped to deal with it ourselves! 

Together we can make a difference, be supportive and most importantly..........talk!
