Stonepillow is a charity that not just provides shelter for people sleeping rough but seeks to give these people back their dignity and their lives.  This is done by offering opportunities for rough-sleepers to take some responsibility for their lives and then to coax, encourage and advise them through a programme that weans them off substance abuse, gets them used to the responsibilities of 'normal' living, offers work experience and finds permanent accommodation until they can stand on their own two feet again.  The success rate is high thanks to the dedicated and compassionate staff who work for Stonepillow but it is expensive work.

Why, because there are three  day centres to maintain and man where the homeless can receive expert advice and care, there are two night shelters, the recovery unit designed to help people recover from substance misuse,  numerous accommodation units and the work experience sites called 'Restore'.  Each homeless or vulnerable person the charity works with has an individually tailored programme involving specialists in the fields of mental and physical health, education in the widest sense, support for living and other skills need for these people to reintegrate into society.  It is a complex and lengthy programme and although there is funding from central and local government for parts of it the shortfall is acute and makes the difference between success and failure.
