North London Hospice supports more than 3,500 people with a life-limiting illness each year in the communities of Barnet, Enfield, and Haringey. Established in 1984, we are committed to empowering our patients through our vision which is to provide the best of life, at the end of life, for everyone.

Story

We’re running a half marathon and we need your help!

On May 21st 2023, twenty runners will be taking part in the Hackney Half Marathon (13.1 miles) in memory and honour of our amazing mum, Mini Majeethia.  She died on May 28th 2022 after a vicious battle with a rare form of mouth cancer. Our team of runners are close friends and family members, and we are raising money for The North London Hospice. The hospice were instrumental in helping us care for mum in her final weeks. The money raised will go towards the continuation of their at-home care services and the inpatient unit in Woodside Park.

Having spent many hours with the hospice nurses while they supported our mum, we know how invaluable their services are. Both the nurses and the support staff spend their days helping families just like ours, during their darkest hours.  Like most people, we never thought we’d be a family that would need their help, but terminal illness does not discriminate.  We are so thankful that mum had access to the NLH team and their extraordinary care, when she needed it most.

Our mum’s death has made us think about the manner in which she lived.  She built a huge community,  fostered connections and supported vulnerable people in their time of need. As a small team of runners we hope to continue her legacy of kindness, by providing some vital funding for the NLH to keep doing their amazing work.

For those of you who did not know mum personally, we wanted to share a short anecdote about her as follows.  One day she was driving my sister to the station, and she saw a heavily pregnant woman sitting on the pavement. She stopped the car and told my sister to run over and see whether she was ok. The woman was very weak after not eating enough that day. Mum opened the car window and shouted over to my sister to help her into the car. She took her to our home where she fed her and then she dropped her to her home.

Mum did things like this all the time, every single day.  Random acts of kindness, everywhere she went.  So please help us continue her legacy by sponsoring our team of runners and supporting the North London Hospice.  Every donation matters, big or small, we are so grateful for every penny.

And finally, we must let you know that the vast majority of people running in our team have never run a 5km, let alone a half marathon.  So wish us luck, we’re going to need it!

Lots of love,

Nayan, Jay, Amy, Priya, Matt, Davina & Willow
