The Egipatsko Selo orphanage in Mostar is home to nearly fifty children. However, for a while now, questions have been posed about what happens to those children when they reach the age when they are no longer able to stay at the orphanage. It is only due to the goodwill of the authorities that some of the older children still have a roof over their heads, as technically, at their age, they should not be permitted to remain at the orphanage. Last year, one young man left the orphanage and was successfully re-housed and a job was found for him. During this year, a further five young people are due to leave the orphanage. The question is where to house them and how?
In 1973, a local Mostar resident who had no children of his own left a nearby house to the orphanage. This house was devastated and destroyed during the war.
Neso Milavic, a local architect, has recently drawn up restoration and refurbishment plans for the property. According to these plans 20-24 young people could be housed in the property. The house would have shared facilities such as kitchens, living rooms and bathrooms, but there would space for individual bedrooms.
To ensure that regulations are followed and there is full transparency, the Our Kids Foundation has appointed Sejo Pintula, a retired architect, to oversee all work and act as a middle man between donors and workmen. Sejo has agreed to do this on a completely voluntary basis.
The total cost of the refurbishment will be 106, 450 KM or 46,381 Pounds. The orphanage, from its own funds, has already repaired the water and electricity supplies. Currently, the Our Kids Foundation has enough funds to pay for the repair of the roof, which is 13,000 Pounds .
We are now collecting money to help fund the rest of the refurbishment project. This will be invaluable for the young people who will otherwise have nowhere to go when they have to leave the orphanage.
We are asking people to give as much or as little as they can.
We are also delighted that Club Neretva in Sweden have joined us in our fundraising efforts and will be raising funds through their own contacts.
