We are fundraising in memory of my Mum, Sue Coleman, she was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer with Ascites in June 2021. Mum was always fit, active, and independent but the illness was debilitating for her from the start. Chemo started soon after the diagnosis.
The whole journey was a rollercoaster. Mum was an inspiration throughout, she never complained, we would tell her how strong and brave she was, and her response was always ‘I don’t have much choice’. There’s always a choice though, Mum chose to fight and that she did. The months that followed consisted of hospital visits/stays, chemo, scans, blood tests etc–although Mum managed to have some good days, most were recovering from chemo, or at the hospital – we became regulars at Broomfield, Basildon, Maldon, and Southend Hospitals.
As Mum’s health was deteriorating the consultant reduced the dose of what turned out to be her last chemo session in September 2022. Unfortunately, Mum was admitted to hospital a week after the chemo with various issues and was now bed bound. We all knew what was coming and our fears were confirmed - it was agreed that the time had come for Mum to be ‘made comfortable’. At this point we were referred to Farleigh Hospice.
Farleigh came and spoke to Mum to offer support and find out what her wishes were, a plan was then put in place to get Mum where she wanted to be, at home. Farleigh ordered all the equipment we needed, i.e., bed, oxygen machine etc to make it possible. As it was still going to take a week to get Mum home, they even sourced a bed for my sisters and I to sleep on at the hospital as up to that point we had been taking it in turns to sleep at the hospital with mum but on two chairs pushed together!
Mum finally came home on 29th September 2022 and from then carers from Farleigh started to visit. Mum loved seeing them and chatting to them, they were all so friendly, helpful, and caring, always made sure she was ok and comfortable as well as checking we were all coping.
Sadly, in the early hours of Saturday 29th October 2022, Mum passed away peacefully at home with us around her.
We cannot thank Farleigh enough for the support and care they gave Mum and us at the most difficult time, so I wanted to give something back and what better way of doing this than a Skydive!! A skydive is nothing compared to what Mum went through and although I am a bit of an adrenaline junkie, it’s out of my comfort zone! I was talking about the Skydive at work and my colleagues at Fisk Group ‘jumped’ on board to do it with me – Lauren Gibson, Tina Pimlott, James Moughton, Richie Said, Josh Blanche, Dan Gibson, Dave Brant, Oliver Mahoney, Mason Parker, Liam Morton, Georgina Plumb and Isaac Bowers. So not only did they support me throughout Mums illness they are also opting to jump out of a plane with me to raise money in Mum’s memory and for such a good cause.
Please give what you can to support our team fundraising for Farleigh, all donations are gratefully received.
