Dean's January 250km “blind” run · 1 January 2021

Imagine being told that you, or someone you love, is losing their sight. In that moment, two profound questions demand urgent answers: Can this be stopped? How will I live my life? We fund the brilliant minds and bright ideas, putting change in sight for everyone impacted by vision loss.

Story

Thanks for visiting my page! My names Dean Argent and in 2012 I was diagnosed with a genetic eye condition called Choroideremia. Choroideremia causes gradual sight loss, resulting in a total loss of sight. I am now aged 35 and I have roughly 6 degrees of vision left (we need 180 degrees to drive a car) Unfortunately, the only medical interventions currently are clinical trials and so I want to help fundraise so that one day there could be a cure. My two daughters are carriers of the faulty choroideremia gene so I can hope that their son’s come along at a time when there is a treatment.

Everyone who follows me on Strava or social media will know I do love to run. And I enjoy it. As I can’t drive, running is my independence and I can travel freely on familiar routes. Many people won’t appreciate how much more concentration it takes to run registered blind. So I have set myself the massive task of running 250km before the end of January 2021. My condition is impacted by poor lighting and the darker months so it is even more of a challenge.

Please sponsor me to get this run completed this month. As an extra incentive, I have some rather stylish pairs of glasses that have been customised so that anyone can wear them and see how I see. If you fancy a personal challenge of running with me and wearing the glasses send me a msg on social media! I’d like to raise awareness of this condition that affects mainly men just the same as raising the money.

Thanks for your support!
