Story
I'm taking on 100km in November for the Bone Cancer Research Trust and your support will make a huge difference!
Earlier this year my daughter Molly found a lump in her chest. At 23 everyone assured it would be nothing to worry about. After a referral from the breast clinic to a specialist unit in Oswestry, and a series of scans, exams and a biopsy, it became clear that this was something the specialists were very concerned about, she had a cartilage tumour in her 3rd rib. They were treating her for a primary bone cancer called chondrosarcoma. UPDATE on 10th November (Post op) it was confirmed that the tumour was a stage 1 chondrosarcoma and that surgery had successfully removed the tumour plus "excellent margins". This is great news, for now Molly will have regular checks at Oswestry to look out for any early signs of recurrence, which are thankfully very low risk
Extremely rare, especially at her age, they had to operate to remove not only the tumour, but also a good margin of tissue, bone and muscle around the area. This also meant plastic surgery including relocating her lat muscle from her back round to the front of the chest for strength around her missing ribs
Almost 10 hours in surgery, 5 days in ICU and a couple of days on the ward, she was amazingly sent home. Her recovery will be lengthy, but starting young and healthy has definitely helped. Some days are better than others, but she is just incredible and I am so proud of her and thankful for the care she has received to date
We couldn't be more grateful to the NHS teams at St Helens, Oswestry, Wythenshawe and the teams working behind the scenes. Also to the bone cancer research trust without whom we may not have had the opportunity for Mol to have this surgery, as chondrosarcoma was believed to be an older person's condition
Whether you donate £5 or £50, every donation helps us to offer hope to people affected by primary bone cancer.Approximately 8,500 people are living with or beyond primary bone cancer in the UK and the Bone Cancer Research Trust is the only charity dedicated to this disease.
