My Mum was diagnosed with a terminal illness February last year, she was never aware of how ill she was, but the whole family pulled together to help look after her, make the most of our time with Mum as well as come to terms with the fact we were going to lose her.

Initially she stabilised and we were able to spoil her with days out and be a family once again. In August she caught an infection which affected her heart and other organs, after 5 weeks in hospital she went back home to her sister, we knew deep down that this was the start of what we had been dreading, she was dying.

Her GP was amazing and put into place palliative care to help us, which involved nurses from Macmillan, Marie Curie and Rowans Hospice offered their support. Sadly Mum died five days before Christmas. I believe that without all the support we had, as a family, we would have fallen apart. 

Rowans Hospice is not just there for the sick but for the families too, since Mum died they have offered bereavement counselling and support groups which I have found very helpful, I can go and talk endlessly about my Mum without being judged or boring anyone!  And meet others who know exactly how I feel.
