Councillor Chris Mavin, Plymouth City Lord Mayor has chosen to raise funds for Memory Matters to help change the face of dementia support in the community.

Story

I am a fifty something who spends most of my time sat at a desk.  The only exercise I get is  the odd walk  which I don't mind as long as there is a cafe or a pub at the end!!!!   I was asked if I would like to support the Lord Mayor's Charity this year and I jumped at the chance as all money raised is going to Memory Matters in Plymouth.

So I am going to get off my derriere and start running.  I'm never going to be any Paula Radcliffe so I have set myself the target of running the distance from Plymouth to Penzance before the end of the year. This is around 77.6 miles so I might as well round it up to 80.

So here goes......please give generously this is not easy and it is not pretty.

In 2010, two nurses – Laura Walker and Kate Smith, set up Memory Matters; an organisation to help change the face of dementia support in our community. Memory Matters started because both women were frustrated with the lack of support provided for people living with dementia, as well as their carers.

Kate and Laura’s intention has always been to provide meaningful services that respond to the needs expressed by people living with dementia. They believe that having access to compassionate support, therapies and peer led activities, enables people to live well with their dementia. As one happy beneficiary described,
“Dementia doesn’t have to mean ‘the end’, it’s just a different chapter.”

Memory MattersPurpose: Enrich the lives of people affected by dementiaValues: People-focused, Compassionate, Open, Positive, Creative and FunVision: A world where people living with dementia are empowered and thriving in their communities.
