Story
A huge thank you to everybody who attended the 'Exploring Albinism' event in Galway!
Although the condition albinism is severely stigmatised in most societies, the situation in parts of Africa is particularly harrowing and extremely pressing. Albinism is caused by a recessive gene possessed by both parents that disrupts the body’s production of melanin, reducing protective pigmentation in the skin, eyes and hair, which significantly reduces.vision and heightens the risk of skin cancer.
Albinism is a rare, non-contagious, genetic condition that entails a significant impairment but it should NOT be life-limiting. However, 98 % of people with albinism die before the age of 40 in Tanzania.
People born with albinism in Sub-Saharan Africa are often victims of mutilation and murder, fuelled by a belief that a person with albinism's body parts can be sold and bring good luck. The stigma that surrounds albinism has dominated for many generations and consequently people with albinism face prejudice, social exclusion and discrimination.
Standing Voice has developed health, advocacy and education programmes to tackle these egregious and barbaric human rights abuses. Please enable them to continue to stand up for one of the most vulnerable and marginalised groups of people in the world by making a donation, however small!
