In July this year I was experiencing severe stomach pains but didn’t react quick enough and tried to work/live through it. After pressure from my family to ‘get checked out’ I called 111 and was told to immediately make my way to A&E. I was in the hospital for a matter of minutes and while getting checked out I went into Sepsis shock. My temperature was over 40, my heart rate racing and although I was sweating, I was freezing and shivering and unable to speak properly. I am so lucky that all of this happened while in hospital and in the hands of our amazing NHS. I was immediately given adrenaline, intravenous antibiotics, morphine, paracetamol and codeine and hooked up to machinery to monitor all of my vitals for just over a week. Severe Sepsis has a mortality rate of 40% and early detection and treatment are key to increasing the chance of survival. I was not aware of Sepsis or how dangerous it is so I am running the Mersey Tunnel 10k in September 2021 on my birthday to raise money and awareness for the UK Sepsis Trust. Fundraising is at the heart of our fight against sepsis. It raises awareness, and sparks the question: “What is sepsis? In this way, fundraising can help prevent thousands of deaths & unnecessary suffering through knowledge & awareness of the symptoms. It also funds our vital support work, Public Awareness, Educating Health Professionals & helping people adjust to life after sepsis through accessing our Support Group network. We also lobby government to support our cause and makes vital changes in areas such as the NHS.
