West Highland Way by Mountain Bike in 24 Hours · 10 July 2013

We provide funding for cancer treatment, care and research. Significant financial support is provided for medical equipment, patient and family facilities and the development of service. We provide additional staff resources including clinical nurse specialists, radiography and research-based staff.

Story

The West Highland Way is one of the toughest things you can do on a mountain bike.  97 miles of steep climbs, technical rocky descents and sections which are simply unrideable where you need to push or carry your bike.  For those who have walked it, just think about trying to cycle some of the toughest sections!  It takes most people 3 days to cycle it.

My challenge is to mountain bike the full WHW, North to South, solo and unsupported, in under 24 hours.  This won't just be a physical challenge - mountain biking in the dark on your own with no support has both physical and psychological demands!

I wanted to make this a really tough challenge in the hope that it generates some great donations for the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre.  The Beatson not only treats cancer patients, but also carries out research into possible new cancer treatments.

Please help a great cause by donating for my challenge.

Note that I'll be doing this w/c 8th July but will pick the exact day that week with the best weather forecast.  I'll update this page nearer the time with the chosen day.

Thanks!

Derek
