Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

My challenge for this year is simple. I’ve spent so much of the last few years in the QMC, now I’m just going to walk down the outside of it!

I’m raising money for the neonatal unit and the children’s hospital parents accommodation as unfortunately I have had to use both of them.

Our first experience of the children’s hospital was when our oldest was 2 days old and got rushed in after a fit in the middle of the night. We stayed there for 2 weeks while we waited and hoped he would get better. There were days I thought we would never take him home, the days and nights were long and it felt like we were there for months, not 2 weeks. But we were lucky and thanks to the amazing care of the doctors, nurses and care assistants he managed to get better and we got to go home. We hoped we would never have to see the place again.

Sadly we did, and a nasty case of RSV at 10 months old meant he had a few days on high dependency. Unlike the other children’s wards - you can’t sleep near your child at night which is where the parent accommodation is so important. When the boys were in hospital, the nurses and doctors took care of them, we took care of them. But we need to take care of the parents. Having a child in hospital is stressful enough, but it is so hard to take care of yourself, rest, eat properly, take a few minutes out from the endless sea of observations, rounds of medications and trying to care for your child in such a strange place.

The big appeal will help provide families with in-hospital facilities so that mums and dads have a comfortable home from home if they ever have to stay in hospital to be close to a sick child while they are receiving care. They will also support research, provide specialised diagnostic equipment to treat sick children and improve outcomes for them, whether they are battling chronic illness or facing a life threatening cancer diagnosis.

Please help me to support this amazing cause and help children and their families. Thank you x
