Every day in the UK, another 240 people wake up to the catastrophic impact of a stroke. The Stroke Association is the only charity in the UK providing lifelong support for all stroke survivors and their families.

Story

1. What am I doing?

The Stroke UK 5k Resolution Run at 11am on Sunday March 23rd, 2014.

2. Why am I doing this?

Good question. The BA Event Management first year students at Univeristy of South Wales are helping market and deliver the event at Bute Park Cardiff on March 23rd, 2014. I thought the least I could do is enter....but I'm not much of one for aerobic exercise, so it will be fun!

3. Who am I doing this for?

As some of you will know, my family and I lost my Mum, suddenly and unexpectedly, on December 30th, 2013. She was a lively, vibrant and much loved 72 year old who was fit and well until 10 days before her death. We are shocked and deeply saddened by her loss and there is hole in the lives of all who knew and loved her. However, we are grateful that Mum did not suffer a long illness and we are all reminded to 'seize the day'. We hope the donations made to Stroke UK in Mum's name will help others facing stroke.

4. Job done!

Well, today was the big day and it dawned a little squally but promising. The Event Management students and I turned up at Bute Park at 0830 hours and despite the cold and wind helped Stroke UK set up the registration desk and the marshal points around the course.

After a warm up (most of which took place in a heavy shower) we lined up at the start with the serious runners at the front and Teresa (a new run mate) and I at the back. We all set off and Teresa and I kept up a good pace whilst swapping stories of our reasons for running. We both lost a mum and mother-in-law within weeks of each other and had extremely similar tales to tell.

Anyway, after 54 minuites we reached the finishing line to cheers from family and friends. I think we came second to last but were both inspired to beat our time next year.

Thanks to all the Event Management students at USW for making the event happen, to Nic and Em and all at Stroke UK (Wales) and really HUGE thanks to everyone who sponsored me.
