We are an international development charity working with marginalised Karen people in the poorest province of Thailand. Through taking a community led-approach we help to provide clean water and sanitation, build sustainable livelihoods and increase access to education. Thank you for your support!

Story

The Karen Hilltribes Trust (KHT) is a charity dedicated to working with the Karen people of northern Thailand to help them build a better future for themselves.

KHT has three key aims:

  • Improving health by installing clean water systems and sanitation
  • Increasing access to education by providing dormitories and teaching
  • Securing better livelihoods by building irrigation systems and regenerating land

Since 1999, KHT has installed clean drinking water for 60,000 people, brought 1,200 acres of farmland back into production through irrigation projects, and helped thousands attend school and university. As part of their work they provide volunteering opportunities teaching English in Thailand, and installing clean water systems in Karen villages. More information can be found on their website: http://www.karenhilltribes.org.uk/

This is where I come in. Following a talk by one of the trustees of KHT at the Yorkshire Countrywomen’s Association, the YCA newsletter asked for volunteers. I have done voluntary work for charity previously and currently I teach basic computer skills as a volunteer at our local village hall. I’ve also worked in the Far East previously in China and I’ve been to Thailand twice on holiday and find the people so welcoming. English language skills are a basic need for the Karen people and therefore I’ve volunteered to teach English to children of all ages in the Mae Hong Son Province in northern Thailand close to the border with Burma. The charity has already helped over 400 villages in a region covering 100 square miles of remote, mountainous country. The trust’s long term vision is to empower the Karen people to help themselves in a sustainable way, whilst retaining their unique identity and culture. I have very little teaching experience, however, I want to use the skills I've got and do what I can for the Karen people. I have the enthusiasm and motivation to help them achieve their goals, with your help by giving whatever funding you feel is appropriate.

I’m planning to start the Education Project on 1st November 2017 and teach in a village school for 10 weeks. I will be supported locally by the charity and I will live with a local family. This is an amazing opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of these people and help them to have a sustainable future.

My target is to raise £1000 to go directly to the project. I really feel that together we can make a difference, so please give what you can to my education project.
