Story

I was 19 weeks pregnant with our 2nd child when I  was diagnosed.

My husband and I were absolutely numb when my consultant confirmed that I had stage 2 HER2+ breast cancer. With any cancer diagnosis I'm sure the shock and fear are indescribable, however to be told this while I was just half way through a pregnancy just brought a myriad of other concerns and fears.

At 24 weeks, I  went through two  surgeries, followed by six months chemotherapy and five weeks of radiotherapy after our son Harrison was born. Finding it hard to cope with being a new Mam and my  treatment,  I  contacted the Irish Cancer Society Nurseline and spoke with one of their nurses.

I found the support and advice invaluable as the Cancer Nurses all understood exactly what I was going through. All my concerns, worries and fears were so familiar to them. I felt so at ease after calling them and never felt I was bothering them or a burden in anyway.

Today I am thankfully out the other side of it all but would really encourage  anyone with questions or concerns about their own personal diagnosis/treatment to contact a Cancer Nurse through the Freephone Nurseline 1800 200 700 or in person at in-hospital Daffodil Centres.

It's just a fantastic service, totally anonymous and I couldn’t recommend it enough to anyone who has been diagnosed or going through treatment.”

Each day, 8 people in Ireland are told they have breast cancer. But thanks to our amazing supporters getting involved in Cups Against Breast Cancer, none of them have to go through it alone.
