My Story…

My name is Dillan and I’m 10 years old. I go to Queen Edith Primary School. I live with my two brothers, my mum and dad in Cambridge.

This year has been a strange one for everyone. Why has it been a strange year for everyone? Because of COVID. We haven’t had any playdates with our friends, we haven’t had a chance to play any sports and sometimes there has been no school.

I decided to raise money for a charity called Blue Smile in Cambridge by climbing the 3 peaks with my dad (Scafell Pike, Snowdon and Ben Nevis). Blue Smile is a charity that helps children who are struggling with difficult emotions. Blue Smile therapists help the kids by asking them to draw, paint and show what their life is like. I chose this charity because I wanted to help kids my own age.

Last year, I interviewed the charity director of Blue Smile, Jess Manley. Her answers to my questions are below:

1.) How does your charity help children in Cambridge?

Blue Smile is a charity that supports children’s mental health in Cambridge. The Blue Smile therapists help the kids by asking them to draw, paint and show what their life is like. Through artworks children learn to identify and control their emotions better and eventually be happy and have fun with their friends and family.

2.) How many years has your charity been around?

Blue Smile has been around for 10 years and it’s official registration date is 8th December 2010.

3.) How many people work in your charity?

About 60-80 people are working at Blue Smile; this  includes full-time, part-time and volunteers.

4.) How many kids have your charity helped?

Blue Smile have helped around 1400 kids over 10 years. They help the kids for as long as they need help.

5.) What is the youngest and the oldest child you have ever helped?

The youngest child they have ever helped is 3 and the oldest they have ever helped  is 14.

6.) How many schools in Cambridge do you help?

Blue Smile helps around 25 schools at any given time.

7.) Does your charity expand all over the country or is it just in Cambridge?

Blue Smile is only in Cambridgeshire because there are so many kids that need help.

8.) How will the money that I raised be used?

The money will be used to pay for the well trained people who are helping the kids. The money will also be used to buy lego, paint, pencils and brushes for kids to create art work.

Thank you for reading my story. Please help me to raise lots of money for Blue Smile so they can continue the brilliant work they are doing.
