Scottish Huntington's Association supports families impacted by Huntington’s disease (HD). 800 people in Scotland have HD with a further 3200 at risk of developing it in the future. HD impacts the ability to walk, talk and swallow, can cause mental illness and affects mood, memory and mobility.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

2013 did not start off as a good year with my father passing away on January 8th after many years of suffering  from Huntington’s Disease(HD). He is now at rest.

For anyone who is not familiar with HD it is a rare inherited neurodegenerative disease. In a nutshell, Alzheimers, Schizophrenia and Parkinson’s rolled into one.

Most of you know how the HD has impacted on me and my family. One way that I am facing what lies ahead of me and life’s obstacles is setting myself a yearly challenge.

So my first challenge is to do the 4 day Inca trek to Machu Picchu. This will be ahead of the HD world congress in Rio. 2013 is also the year that Paul and I turn 50 so this trip is part of our birthday challenge. We will be doing the trek as a family and have decided to do it as a fundraiser in my dad’s memory.

In past years we have raised funds for the Scottish Huntington’s Association(SHA). This year we will also be raising money for the Huntington’s Disease Youth Organization(HDYO). The HDYO is an international non-profit voluntary organisation set up to specifically provide support for young people around the world impacted by HD. They are special in that it is run entirely by young people for young people. As a new charity they are not yet on justgiving, so the funds will be raised through the SHA and then split 50/50. More information can be found on their webpage, http://en.hdyo.org/.

This is going to be a very special trip and it will be made even better with your support.
