Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit our Just Giving page.

The Master of the Worshipful Company of Distillers set out at the start of his year by saying he would do something different for Charity in his Master’s year.  Little did we know back in November 2019 quite what this year would bring - we have already seen a fantastic response to initiatives from earlier in the year but now we have something that is going to challenge the Master and seven other intrepid riders both physically and mentally as they undertake “The Distillers 500” - cycling from the Master's home town of Auchterarder in Perthshire, Scotland to Guildhall Yard in the City of London.

Joining the Master will be fellow Liverymen Ed Macey-Dare, David Wilson, Alan Montague-Dennis and James Higgins and three other industry stalwarts Ann Medlock, Scott Allen and Simon Swift.   Over 7 days in September 2020, the 8 riders will travel 500 miles by pedal power - despite the 1000s of miles that have been completed in training this will be a physical and mental endurance test for all the riders, many of whom have never undertaken a challenge like this before.

We are raising money for The Distillers’ Charity - with 50% of all the monies raised then going to support On-Side Youth Zone - a charity designed to give young people aged 8-19 years old somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to in their leisure time, occupying their bodies and minds with fun activities, learning new skills and socialising in a safe, positive way.   They are there for young people in deprived areas where the alternative for many is spending the evening on the streets or isolated in their bedrooms, surfing the internet.

In addition, each rider has nominated a personal charity that will receive an equal donation of the remaining 50% of monies raised.   Those personal charities are:

The Saints & Sinners Club of Scotland

The Woodland Trust

Action Against Hunger

The Stonyhurst Foundation

Parkinsons UK

Scottish Association for Mental Health

The St Nicholas Nairobi Fund

The Royal Marines Charity

Our vision is to make a difference to young people, including those within the distilled spirits trade, helping them to reach their full potential, improve their life chances, and make a positive contribution to their communities. We will achieve this in the following ways: i. Vocational Training Fund: to provide educational and development support to new and recent entrants to the UK spirits trade, encourage high standards of distilling practice and service. ii. Youth Action Fund: to support young people, especially from disadvantaged backgrounds, ta.o develop their character and life skills to reach their potential and make a positive contribution to their communities. iii. Other Causes: to fulfill our wider civic duties as a Livery, supporting the Lord Mayor’s Appeal, the Master’s charity and other relevant charitable commitments.
