Why is supporting Triangle Community Center so important to me? Because it truly is an incredible resource here in Norwalk, CT, for LGBTQ+ folks of all ages. When I think of all the LGBTQ+ children and teens whose families don't accept them, it makes my blood boil. My own child is only 3, and I want to be sure he grows up knowing that our family's support and acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community is more than just words. It's our time, our money, and our actions. I want to do my part to be sure TCC continues to thrive for my son and his friends as they grow up. I will always show unwavering support and acceptance of my son, and I feel better as a parent knowing that TCC is in our community should my son come out to us someday. (I try to raise him with no assumptions - I do not assume he is straight, I do not assume he is gay, or trans, or nonbinary - he's a kid who can tell us who he is when he's ready.) TCC is a place he can go to find mentors and community. And should he grow up to be a cisgender, heterosexual man, then I want him to know that there is no place for toxic masculinity in our home. To know that everyone deserves our full support and acceptance to be fully themselves. To know that it's his job to speak up if someone is mistreating another person for being themselves.

When I think about creating change and speaking up for others, I begin with what I can do in my corner of the world. I can be intentional about the books and music that enter our home, and the books and music I share in my classroom. My instagram account @diversify.our.parenting is all about spreading the word about those books, music, podcasts, and more to ensure our children are exposed to all different races, genders, sexualities, family structures and abilities.
