We offer free support to people with cancer and their loved ones

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Those of you who know me know of my journey since the loss of my sister in 2011 and my wife in 2012, and that I am incredibly proud to be an advocate for Maggie’s Fife.  I know first-hand the importance of the work Maggie’s do to support those with a cancer diagnosis, and also their families and loved ones.

Each Centre costs on average £2,400 per day to run, and without the selflessness and the generosity of Fifers, Maggie’s Fife could not provide these vital services. It is my goal to continue to raise funds for Maggie’s, and also to increase awareness of the help and assistance they can provide, not only to those who have been stricken by this insidious disease, but to their family and friends too. I am certainly proof of that.

I have been proud to support Maggie’s through my previous expeditions and challenges. I cycled from Lands End to John O’Groats in nine days and trekked for three days into the Arctic Circle, pushing myself  both physically and mentally. I choose these strenuous challenges because I believe it is important that I truly earn your donations, so that  Maggie’s can continue to support people just like me.

On July 2nd 2021 at the tender age of 61 I retired from  Police Scotland after over 28 incredible years service. As a swansong it was my fervent hope to complete one more big challenge before I hung up my hat for good. I therefore signed up to trek Africa's tallest mountain Kilimanjaro.

I was due to fly out on July 14th 2021 to coincide with my retiral, however as we all know, the  Covid 19 virus struck in April 2020 and continues to disrupt all of our lives terribly, including the multiple postponements of the trek.

I am pleased to announce that the trek will now be going ahead as of 18th January 2022. It will take me 9 days to complete the 19,340 feet of climb. This will be a real challenge for me, firstly because oxygen deprivation is an issue climbing so high so quickly, and also because I don't particularly enjoy hill walking!!

I am fully committed though, and determined to wave the flag for Maggie’s at the summit.

This trek is entirely self-funded and it has been paid for, so any support or assistance you can provide will be warmly appreciated, with ALL money donated going to your local Maggie’s Centre here in Fife, at a time when they need it most.

THANK YOU!
