Breast Friends and Family support breast cancer patients at St John’s Hospital in Livingston, through diagnosis, treatment and recovery; to provide the little things that make a big difference. Breast Friends and Family has been setup by Hazel, her sister Mandy, mother Sylvia and daughter Holly. Hazel was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2015 which shocked the family but the challenges this diagnosis brought were faced with a steely determination to keep life going as normal and provide Hazel with the support she needed through treatment and recovery. The family realised that patients are supported by a number of cancer charities, each one giving additional support that patients are not even aware that they need. They began fund raising, by dancing, running, walking, knitting, sewing and organising events in support of many cancer charities. Hazel was given lots of support from a local charity based at St John’s Hospital in Livingston. As she recovered she wanted to help and support this local charity so that others like her, having a breast cancer diagnosis, were helped in the way that she was. Sadly this charity is no longer running. Hazel and her family and friends are now determined to make sure that all patients diagnosed with breast cancer at St John’s, are given the kind of help they don’t even realise they need. Providing the little things that make a big difference.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page

In May of this year my wife Emma was unexpectedly diagnosed with breast cancer.  The first part of her treatment involved an operation to remove the tumour.  When Emma went into hospital she was surprised  to receive an amazing goodie bag from breast friends and family and this was when we were introduced to this incredible charity. The goodie bag contained extremely thoughtful items such as an organza bag filled with lavender, a crystal guardian angle, a pair of slippers and a hand made love heart shape cushion to provide comfort after the operation so much more.

Emma's treatment took a detour in that not all the cancer cells were removed after the first operation and so she chose to have a mastectomy with reconstruction. Breast friends and family at this point gifted Emma a front fastening bra which has been amazing from a practical and comfort point of view.

Emma is about to embark on the next stage of her treatment and undergo chemotherapy. While she is OK with loosing her hair it really bothered her to think she was going to loose her eyebrows and breast friends have demonstrated their generosity again by paying for her to have her eyebrows microbladed (tattooed on).

So for that reason I want to do something to express our thanks for their help and support so far and have decided to take part in their sponsored abseil from the Forth Rail Bridge! Any sponsors big or small are very much appreciated.
