Story

The Tour de Grouse The Tour de Grouse has been running for ten years. The route has visited Highlands and Lowlands, the North and the South, East and the West. When it started there was an element of the unknown – would we make it, what would it feel like? Nobody was a real cyclist, most just visitors retired from the rigours of other sports. The challenge became attractive and the popularity of the event evident in the gradually increasing size of peleton, and ever greater amounts raised for charity. Now it has come full circle. Some regulars now take their cycling seriously, with others only donning lycra for the Tour, the cup final of their sporting year. This will be the last tour.

We will be riding for the Braemar Mountain Rescue and it is hoped to give them a good cheque at the end. If you are wondering why……….well many of the friendships that exist in the peleton are founded upon the hills, mountains, ski-ing, paddling, running, climbing and adventure. We are all potential clients of the mountain rescue. Over the years we have given to great causes and vulnerable people. So far the tally is at about £80,000.  This one is about giving for the future – who knows when any of us, or people who do the same stuff as us, will need them. They require a constant stream of funding to allow them to carry out a rescue. They have some structured funding but also rely on other sources to keep the team going.

I have a friend that volunteers for a rescue team. He will go out in the most miserable weathers to help. As well as working in the hills, a team will rescue and retrieve in some lower level dramatic locations. Sometimes he is only able to help those that are left behind. His stories are quite harrowing and thought provoking on one level and utterly selfless on another. I would urge you to invest in this cause and get your family and friends to dig deep! Please pass the word around.

In return we will ride over Glenshee, The Lecht and the Dava before free wheeling down to the Moray Firth!
