Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
"On the 2nd Nov 2019 my brother lost his battle with brain cancer. He was 58.
Jez or Harry as he was affectionately known by most, was a quick witted, kind hearted person, who loved a chat and was a captivating storyteller. He was proud of the time he spent in the RAF serving his country, he was a loving husband, father, son and brother.
Growing up in a family of 5 siblings he was the one most likely to be pushing the boundaries at home and school. He knew how to push buttons...especially his older brother's!! He was the cheeky one, the risk taker, the daring one, the joker.
He taught me how to ride a bike, bought me my first drink, took me to my first concert and backstage afterwards to meet the band. He introduced me to the music of The Rolling Stones, The Stranglers, The Ramones, The Clash, The Jam and whilst he would strongly deny it if he was here today....ABBA.
He loved to travel, to cook, to read and spend time with his family and whilst thousands of miles separated us I always knew he would be there if I needed him.
Following his diagnosis in early 2019, the disease, the surgery and the treatment quickly took its toll on him, but he never lost his sense of humour or his smile, always had a pat for his dog & did not give up on life easily. When he could no longer structure a sentence or struggled to remember a word, his eyes would get that cheeky glint in them, they were the windows to his soul.
I was shocked when I learnt that 1700 people in Australia are diagnosed with brain cancer each year, that it kills more children in Australia than any other disease and more people under the age of 40 than any other cancer. Only two in ten people diagnosed with brain cancer will survive for at least five years. And yet brain cancer receives less than 5% of federal government cancer research funding.
So I am committing to raising awareness of, donating to & fundraising for brain cancer research for 58 weeks. That's one week for every year of my brothers life.
I am going to be riding 500km a week...I know that's more than some people drive in a week and instead of my post ride coffee stop I will donate the cost of a cup of coffee to curebraincancer.org.au for every 100km's I ride. That pretty much equates to $25.00 a week...a drop in the ocean compared to what is needed but it's a start.
So how can you help....why not join me on the journey....don't panic I don't mean in a literal sense... but by sponsoring me, if you click on the 'sponsor' tab at the top lefthand corner of this page and buy me a 'virtual coffee' by donating the cost of a cup or two or three, once a week, a month or even just once...every little bit will help.
There's no doubt that cyclists love their post ride cup of coffee so here's a thought....Cycling Queenland has 29 affiliated clubs with over 4000 members throughout Queensland imagine if everyone donated the cost of just one cup of coffee once a year....that'd be $20,000 raised just like that!
Together we can raise much needed funds for brain cancer research and hopefully in the future increase the survival rate of those affected.
In memory of Jez Fenton. 11/09/61 - 02/11/19. Rest in Peace.
