Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

What am I doing?

I am doing a self-funded trekking challenge to hike canyons in Arizona and Utah so that I can raise awareness and sponsorship for the rescue and care of dogs. I want to make sure that all of the funds raised will go to the rescue – none of it will be used to fund my trip at all…..it will all go directly to the dogs’ care and re-homing and I hope you can help me to do that.

Why am I doing it?

I have had rescue dogs in my life for over 30 years. Many breeds
have crossed my threshold, and all have stayed until their natural end. My passion is for the pointy noses…..the athletes of the dog world…..the greyhounds, the whippets, the salukis, the lurchers and the longdogs.

It never ceases to amaze me how these beautiful affectionate
creatures who often arrive broken, physically and/or mentally, can find it in their hearts to trust in mankind again and learn to live a life full of joy
again with someone who understands them and loves them for all that they are.

Many however, cannot do this without the dedication and support of a lot of people all involved from the point of rescue, to rehabilitation to
eventual re-homing.

I am proud to volunteer for the Forever Hounds Trust who are
dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and homing of abused and abandoned greyhounds and lurchers. From humble beginnings in the west of England the charity now operates nationally – homing around 500 of these special dogs every year. I know the effort that goes in all the way along the journey and how if a dog passes through the door of the Trust it and their new human companion(s) will have lifelong support if ever needed.

But like many they need the funds to operate. Many of us gladly give up our time to help but medical bills, food and kennelling and training and behaviorists all come with a cost so good intention alone can’t
do it all.

What is the challenge?

Over a period of 8 days I will travel to the deserts of Arizona and Utah to trek along sections of the great canyons. Some will be on the floor of the canyons some will be along the rims. I will be camping out for the duration of the trek.

The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided canyon carved by the Colorado River in Arizona, The Grand Canyon is 277 miles (446 km) long, up to
18 miles (29 km) wide and attains a depth of over a mile (6,093 feet or 1,857 meters)

Bryce Canyon is located in southwestern Utah. The major
feature of Bryce Canyon, is a collection of giant natural amphitheatres along the eastern side of the Paunsaugunt Plateau which is distinctive due to geological structures called hoodoos, formed by frost weathering and stream erosion of the river and lake bed sedimentary rocks

Zion Canyon is a deep and narrow gorge in southwestern Utah,
carved by the North Fork of the Virgin River. It approaches 2,000 feet (610 m) deep in places, and while the canyon rim is dominated by desert, the canyon floor supports a forest. I've added some pictures in the story below so you can get an idea of what lies ahead for me.

Having hiked many sections of the Great Wall of China for 5 days in 2017 to raise much needed funds for my local hospice, this time I wanted my four legged buddies to benefit this time. I hope you can help.
