Edinburgh Kiltwalk 2023 · 17 September 2023 ·

Greener Peebles runs a thriving intergenerational community garden in Peebles, Scottish Borders. Volunteers learn how to grow food, develop skills, make friends and build confidence. All sessions end with a free harvest to take home, so everyone has access to fresh produce.

Story

Callum and I are doing the 21 mile 'Mighty Strider' in the Edinburgh Kiltwalk this September to raise funds for the charity Greener Peebles, which runs an inter-generational community garden. www.greenerpeebles.org There is always a warm welcome for all volunteers and visitors and, as well as growing fruit and vegetables, we hold community events such as skill shares, community meals and gardening sessions for preschool children and babies. We currently have 2 old lawnmowers and strimmers which run on fossil fuels and we are really keen to replace these with electric equipment which we could charge with a portable solar powered power station. This would also enable us to have light and power in the barn and yurt when the nights draw in during the winter months, as they have no mains electricity.

The longest distance I have run is 10km which was more than a quarter of a century ago and the furthest I have walked is about 15miles which was about a decade ago. Now that I am in my 60s I think the Mighty Strider will be a real challenge, so any encouragement through sponsorship or otherwise would be most welcome.
