Story

Harrison is our lovely 8 years old son, who following a birth injury has severe cerebral palsy. We are fundraising through Just4Children to help with the adaptations required to live a dignified life long term with his family.

Harrison, now age 8, was born prematurely following an umbilical cord prolapse at home. Following a hairy journey to hospital Harrison and the fastest hands in the west Harrison was born by crash section 12 minutes after arriving at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. The fantastic team there performed CPR on Harrison before he was put on a ventilator and cooling machine for a number of days to try and prevent further brain damage.

Since then, Harrison has spent much of his life in and out of hospital with multiple respiratory tract infections. However, thanks to the wonderful care he has received he was making steady progress and had learned to eat and drink, sit, crawl and was learning to stand and making some progress towards walking.

Unfortunately, in June 2020 disaster struck and Harrison sustained a further brain injury secondary to a cardiac arrest at home due to a choking episode. He then spent over 4 months in hospital recovering, during which time he had many life-threatening complications.

Harrison lost most of his previous skills and is not currently able to eat or drink or mobilise independently, He still has a great love of Peppa Pig and enjoys time with his family, especially with his little sister.

It is though becoming increasingly difficult to meet his living needs without the specialist equipment and adaptations needed for mobilisation and bathing, such as hoists, an adjustable bath and a lift to upstairs.

In addition, we intend to alter the existing layout of the house to allow better access for Harrison’s wheel-chair to ensure he remains involved in family life as much as possible.
