Good news!

Richard, Kevin and David successfully reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro on 12th August 2010 at 6.45 am.

After six days trekking from the rain forest above Londrossi gate across the Shira plateau, we eventually started our summit attempt at midnight from Barafu camp. Using head torches to light the path, we climbed across rocks to reach the endless scree slopes that cover the approach to the crater rim.

Gradually we came across increasing numbers of climbers forced to turn back due to altitude sickness and the decreasing temperature. Finally with much encouragement from our guides, Bruno and Saumu, we reached the first, lower peak of Stella Point.

Although exhausted, we were revived by hot sweet tea and we able to walk round the crater rim to the highest point in Africa, Uhuru Peak (5895m). There the temperature fell to -20C with a 20km/hr cross wind to add some wind chill. The photo will show just how cold it was! Unfortunately low lying clouds obscured the views - and prevented the sunrise from warming the air. After 15 minutes we headed back down, and two hours later had breakfast back at the camp.

As you know we are collecting for a local Hastings charity, Parchment Trust, which provides care for adults with disabilities. They are based just along the Ridge at Friary Gardens, and in the town centre at Nelson Road. Although the climb has been completed it is not too late to donate and the site will remain open for another 3 months.
