Supports serving and ex serving members and their families of The Royal Dragoon Guards and their antecedent regiments the 4/7th Royal Dragoon Guards and the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards, in times of hardship

Story

On Saturday 23rd April 2011, two former Officer’s of The Royal Dragoon Guards will compete in the annual Devizes to Westminster Canoe race, often referred to as ‘the Everest of Canoeing’.  The race begins at Devizes in Wiltshire and finishes at Westminster Bridge, London 24 hours later.  In between, the two will negotiate 54 miles of the Kennet and Avon canal, before joining the River Thames where a further 70 miles must be negotiated – Along the 124 mile route a total of 77 locks must be ‘portaged’, adding significantly to this formidable physical challenge.

Majors Andrew MacKinnon and Christopher Bailey both joined the ‘Skins’ in May 1988, serving for 12 and 19 years respectively.  Both served their Regiment with pride and despite moving on have remained close to both Officer’s and soldiers alike.  During the recent tour to Afghanistan the Regiment suffered 4 fatalities and a number of serious injuries.  It is with these brave soldiers and their families in mind that both former Officers are determined to complete this event with the aim of raising £10000 for The Royal Dragoon Guards Regimental Association and Help For Heroes (75%/25% split). Funds will be needed for many years to come to support those physically and mentally scarred from their time served in Afghanistan and who’s lives will never be the same again.”
