Story

We did it! With a final push in Cambridge on a wet and windy July Friday, we hit our goal of £40,000 to fund the new kindergarten school in Dwabor.  Many, many thanks to everyone that has helped so far.

This is not the end of the road for Dwabor, as we have plans to build a third classroom for the nursery school, and will be setting another target of £15,000 to complete the project, but in the meantime thank you so much to everyone involved for your incredible support.

The Sabre Trust is Davis Langdon's charity of the year for 2008-2010, and together this partnership is aiming to make a major difference to the quality of kindergarten teaching, by building a new school for Dwabor and setting a new standard for kindergarten schools in Ghana.

The case for investing in kindergarten teaching is compelling, with many young Ghanaians beginning primary school without a solid foundation in literacy or numeracy, which in turn leads to high failure rates, and children being held back year after year.

Together with the engineering firm Arup, Davis Langdon and Sabre have designed a new prototype kindergarten school for Ghana, which will be built on sustainable principles, at low cost, and most importantly in response to the teaching principles contained in the government's curriculum.

The pilot school is being built in Dwabor - work on site started in April 2009, and should be complete in time for the new school term in September. Once proven the design will then be rolled out to other communities in the KEEA district where Sabre is based.

As well as building new schools, the Sabre Trust is furnishing them with appropriate furniture, supplying teaching and learning materials and supporting the teachers through a classroom based coaching scheme.

To fund the kindergarten project in Dwabor, we need to raise £40,000 - please give whatever you can afford to help make this new school a reality for the children of Dwabor.  You can follow the progress of the build on our Dwabor blog.
