Story
My challenge is to cycle 346 miles in January. This is no random number, it’s the return journey from my home to both The Nickless, Goodheart’s Farm Animal Sanctuary and Wiccaweys, our dog rescue.
I will achieve this on my indoor bike (I will take a photo of each journey to show mileage completed) and maybe, weather permitting, I’ll ‘get out there’ on my road bike and will record those journeys using Strava.
Let me tell you why....
There are two operations under the Goodheart umbrella. One gives lifetime care to so called ‘farm’ animals (Pigs, Cattle, hens, Goats, Horses,Geese, Sheep etc) and the other, a dog rescue, which aims to find new loving forever homes for dogs which arrive at the rescue or lifetime care to those, who for whatever reason, can’t join a family home.
The ‘farm’ animals come to us from various circumstances; rescued from the dairy or meat industries, households who can no longer look after them, the egg industry etc. The dogs also come in for a variety of reasons; whether abandoned by their owners, families who love them but can no longer care for them, from rescues we work closely with in both Ireland and Romania and sometimes the odd stray will find its way to us and spend their ‘time’.
Not only do Goodheart provide wonderful, best quality care, they also aim to educate the public about the characteristics of their residents and the environmental impact of animal agriculture on the environment and human health.
2020 has been a difficult year for many charities, especially animal charities, who received no help from the government yet couldn’t furlough their animal carers.
