Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page!
My name is Dylan Pugh and I have been selected by the charity Project Trust to go to Japan for 12 months to teach. I live just outside Cardiff in South Wales and attend Stanwell School Sixth Form in Penarth.
Project Trust is an educational charity based on the Hebridean Isle of Coll, it sends about two hundred volunteers to twenty-five countries anually and is widely respected as one of the most experienced and professional gap-year organisations in Britain. To volunteer I had to travel up to Coll to take part in the four day selection course, which was challenging in itself, not only actually travelling up there but also we took part in community service projects and trials of teaching lessons.
I am interested in taking a gap year with Project Trust because I would experience living in a completely different culture to my own, learning Japanese cooking, their way of life and the language. As I wish to train as a teacher after University I think it will also be a great way of developing my teaching skills with a wide range of age groups.
I will be living in a rural area of Japan – Hokkaido, the northernmost Island. In addition to classroom teaching I’ll be giving conversation classes to members of the PTA, the local community and primary schools. I’m also hoping to do some voluntary work while in Hokkaido.
In order to go to Japan I have to raise £4850 for Project Trust, this amount covers flights, medical insurance, training, support, accommodation and food while abroad. The actual cost to Project Trust of sending a volunteer abroad is around £5,500, however volunteers are only required to fundraise part of this amount and Project Trust will raise the additional funds.
So far my fundraising has included a ‘Drag Race’ (a mile race in lady’s clothes! I lost but still raised money!), having my chest and back waxed (which was the most pain ever) and my amazing Dad cycling from London to Brussels! There’s more in the pipeline so I’m edging towards that target. Any extra help you could give would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks very much
Dylan
