Story

Thanks for visiting our page and more importantly for donating to Fr Peter Lafferty’s orphanage project in Durban South Africa. The orphanage depends totally on charity for its existence. Peter and the other volunteers take in all kinds of kids who are in desperate need of care and attention, most of whom have been abandoned and found on the streets. Many on the kids parents have died of aids and the kids themselves also suffer from a wide range of illness. Just imagine when you go home at night turn on the light and maybe take a shower, now imagine the orphanage which has no electricity, no clean running water and is very over crowded.....trust me they need every penny you donate.

What are we prepared to suffer to get your money for Peter? We will be taking part in the 2010 Etape Caledonia Road Race. The race covers a distance of 130Km/81 Miles with an ascent of approx 2000M. This not only gives us a chance to get our 30 and 40 year old bodies fit but it also raise some much needed cash for Peter’s orphanage.

In addition to this Eoan will be running the Edinburgh Marathon 26.2 miles on May 23rd.

Follow up letter from the charity..............

“To Michael and all the guys who took part in the fund-raising cycle race and to Eoan for running the Edinburgh marathon  supporting the orphanage in South Africa.

On behalf of Mr and Mrs Duma, who are the inspiration and the soul behind the project of looking after the orphans, I would like to thank you for the fantastic generosity of all who participated in the cycle ride.  We are in real need at the moment as we are planning to move the orphans to a newly built home, but we have very little furnishings.  We have beds and a fridge and a dodgy stove, but no cupboards, wardrobes, curtains etc. So, what you have raised will go towards putting in furnishing. The name of the home is Tholuthando, which is Zulu for, "We have found love".  The home was set up by Sindi Duma.  She began taking in children who were abused or left as orphans because of the AIDS pandemic that is a blight on the South African population.  She opened the doors of her own house to these children.  She now has over thirty children living in a two bedroomed house.  Their ages range from 1-18 years of age.  The one year old was found at the age of 6 months dumped in a skip.  With substantial help from one of the construction companies involved in building the world cup stadium in Durban, we are in the process of trying to build a purpose built home in a more suitable area.  It is a struggle everyday to find food to feed these kids, but we somehow manage it.  Your generous contribution will be a great help.  If you want to read more and see a few pictures there are a number of websites available. A Dutch group of helpers have established the site and they have been very helpful in paying for the children to go to school and to pay for health care.

Once again, thank you for putting your legs and you energy into raising valuable funds.  Once again the Scots have shown their compassion and generosity.  Who's like us?

Peter Lafferty”
