For those of you who don’t know my story, in 2011 my lovely mum passed away after being diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour (known as a NET). In the years that followed, my dad and I organised an annual walking event so that friends, family and colleagues could come together, remember my mum and raise some money for the NET Patient Foundation – a wonderful charity who helped us through a really tough time and the only one in the UK dedicated to supporting those affected by this type of cancer. Sadly though in 2013, my amazing dad had a sudden heart attack and passed away too.
Keen to carry on the success of what my dad and I started together, I’ve continued to fundraise for the charity, and, thanks to the kindness and support of the people I know, have raised in excess of £12,000 over the course of 4 years, which I’m so grateful for. But extra funds can always be put to good use – the poor awareness and vague symptoms of this less common cancer often results in a late diagnosis and therefore limited treatment options. Like my mum, up to 80% are diagnosed at an advanced stage, which just isn’t really acceptable.
So, moving onto 2017, and this year is a big year – it would have been my mum and dad’s 40th wedding anniversary and also my mum’s 60th birthday – so I felt an equally big challenge was required. I think dragging my blistered feet and aching limbs around Edinburgh on a 26 mile run just about cuts it. This will be my first (and almost certainly last) marathon, so I need to make it count. If you’d like to show your support, any donations would be very much appreciated.
