Story
I REALLY hate running. So why on Earth am I running over 26 miles in one go? (The London Marathon.) I’m not doing this to save the bunnies, I’m selfish. I’m doing it to make life better for all the people I care about (if you’ve found your way to this page you’re one of them!) OK, I admit I’m doing it for the bunnies too.
When I realised that the air outside my my heath-side home in beautiful Blackheath breached London’s pollution cap for the whole year in less than one month I realised something was very wrong with the way we are looking after the planet we are living on. I couldn’t ignore it any more. We naughty humans are treating our planet so badly we are making it, and practically everything that lives on it sick - and the people in charge aren’t doing much about it. That means it’s up to us to sort things out. This isn’t just scare mongering headlines. I was curious and got my own nitrogen dioxide monitor, which confirmed what the papers and my nose were telling me - the air here is BAD for you!
Any money you donate will Go to ClientEarth - a legal charity that takes governments (including our own) to court when they fail to meet their legal obligations to protect us and our environment. The good thing is ClientEarth win - a lot. They force polluting industries to shut down, and protect irreplaceable forests and vulnerable species. Check them out - they really do make a difference to the health of your world. Who likes swimming in beaches full of plastic litter, or having no snow on their Ski holiday because of climate change? Not me! (Yes, air travel is bad too - which makes me part of the problem, but I’m working on that...)
Even if you don’t donate I can still feel smug that I’ll be making your air a little better - at least on the day I’m grimacing round the course. How? Last year Kings College London tested Air pollution (NOx) in central London, and found that it had dropped 89% on the Sunday of the marathon, as cars were barred from streets for the event!
