Story
December 2020 after finishing work for the last day of a busy year and with plans to drink Irish coffee for the next 2 weeks I instead found myself delivering a urine sample to the doctors surgery for my 2 year old daughter Nellie. After 10 minutes of waiting I knew something was wrong. After a week of her drinking and weeing every half an hour we were rushed to Hull Royal Hospital on a Friday night, Friday 17th December, there we stayed for the next 7 days.
Nearly 12 months later and life has changed beyond all recognition all plans out of the window, dedicated to learning how to and looking after Nellie to manage her Type 1 Diabetes. We have had lots of valuable support and help along the way, however, what we have sadly learnt though is that depending on where you live will depend on the support and care you or loved ones will get. We've been very lucky and are supremely greatful that Hull and East Riding Hospitals fund what is in our opinion a life saving peice of blood glucose monitoring equipment called Dexcom, however while we are lucky to have this many children living in other areas of the country do not receive this peice of kit and to self fund costs £159 per month.
I am running in support of Diabetes UK in the hope that this money raised will help go towards proving vital equipment and technology for those not lucky enough to be able to self fund or receive this from their local NHS trust.
Diabetes UK aim to influence the healthcare received and improve services for people with diabetes at a local level and by raising awareness of the condition, therefore any money raised will help them to achieve this aim and hopefully change lives for people living with Type 1 Diabetes for the better.
