Story

Right, it's time to conquer the ARC OF ATTRITION!

There is no denying, I do love a crazy endurance challenge with a bit of fundraising thrown in the mix and an opportunity to celebrate the life of my amazing dad. The ARC has been my nemesis since 2020, with the ARC 50-mile ultra under my belt in 2019, I thought i'd give the 100-miler a go in 2020, again in 2022 and now for a third time on the 27th January 2023!

The ARC 100, aka the La Sportive ARC of Attrition ultra winter marathon is a brutal 100-mile (apparently 102.3 miles!) run from Coverack to Porthtowan along the epically beautiful south west coast path in Cornwall, with 4,241m elevation. The ARC is interspersed with some crazy terrain (mostly wet, muddy and slippery as hell at the moment!), steep climbs and rock bouldering! The event takes place between the 27th-28th January, has a strict cut off time of 36 hours and mostly experienced in the dark depths of winter. BRING IT ON!

The ARC is an internationally renowned ultra running event, with pro’s running in from all over the world to give it a go. The tiny issue I have is that I’m no natural runner! My comfort zone is on the dance floor, a yoga mat, on a SUP board, wild swimming or dreaming up the next creative project! Yet, after completing the 50-mile ARC in 2019 with a giant smile on my face, I thought i'd give the 100-miler a go in 2020; I reached 55-miles. I returned for the second time in 2022 where I time out at Zennor at mile 76. When I woke the day after I knew what I needed to do, so a day later I got dropped off at Zennor to run the final 26 miles of the ARC. I wasn't giving in that easily! So in my own slow plodding way i've completed the ARC, just minus the crazy tight cut offs! So this year, it's been about shifting the training up a gear, working on my running mindset, plant based nutrition and getting excited about giving the ARC a go for the 3rd time! I'm feeling positive, yet mindful anything could happen out there on the coast path!
